"World of Work" Program at Cajon Valley Schools is Example of Effective Education
Superintendent David Miyashiro at Cajon Valley School District has about 19,000 students enrolled in his many different schools for grades K-9. He is offering students at an early age, grade 5 for example to begin exploration of possible career pathways. The schools are inviting the business and public business sectors into the classroom by video and in person to present what they do, why their job is a great career and what it takes to qualify for those jobs. Policemen, Firemen, Plumbers, Building Contractors and more are examples of the careers that children get exposure to and it helps them to form career goals at an early age.
This makes a lot of sense, when you have an idea of your career pathway, at an early age, education becomes much more meaningful and it helps to make school a lot more interesting for students when they know they are working toward something that matters. Far less effective is our current system of just learning for learning's sake. I remember being required to take courses in school that I wondered how those courses would ever help me later in life.
We are working with Superintendent Miyashiro and his team of dedicated teachers, administrators and students to continue to improve his World of Work program. We are bringing more business people and public-sector people into the schools to connect with students and too show the wide array of career opportunities available to students in our local communities.
But there is much more that we can do. We need to connect this effort to our high schools and community colleges so there is a continuous education bridge for students, to pursue their career pathways in alignment for an improved chance of success. We can and must improve our education system and get back to being one of the best counties in the world when it comes to helping people to educate for their future careers. I salute Dr. Miyashiro and his team's efforts and look forward to even greater success in the future.
